長久以來，karl Fisher的水份測定方式廣范的應用在產業及品管實驗室上，pyridine (具毒性) 原先被認為是化學反應中的主角。但在後續的研究發展中, 發現 Pyridine 在整個反應中只是擔任緩衝(buffer)的角色，且可被其它物質取代，使整個測定工作較安全及無令人厭惡之氣味。
